I drove for hours through beautiful Colorado and Wyoming landscape to photograph Devils Tower in northeastern Wyoming as severe storms would be going through the area. After getting pelted with hail, I hiked a quarter mile up a hill to get Devils Tower angled with the storm how I wanted. I was able to set up my camera with just enough time for one picture as the storms were leaving and the light was changing.

Rising over 850 feet from its base, Devils Tower is considered sacred to the Lakota and other tribes in the area. This area was established as the first National Monument in 1906 by Theodore Roosevelt.

This beautiful natural wonder was also the focus of the 1977 movie, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.

This cumulonimbus thunderstorm cloud quickly formed over the southeastern Wyoming landscape near Cheyenne. Early June is prime thunderstorm season in this area of Wyoming. Between watching the pronghorns gallop and the thunderstorms explode, it's quite a nature scene.

I think I was the only human around for at least a 5-10 mile radius. This was about 30 miles northeast of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Storms out there seemed to be an optical illusion at times because I couldn't easily judge their distance since there were no trees or landmarks. I opted to go to this area and skip the Oklahoma/Texas panhandle area which ended up having a mini tornado outbreak there. But, I ended up getting about 20 good quality storm shots in this area so I'd like to think I made the better decision.

Early June is the peak of severe weather season for Wyoming. This picture is from South Eastern Wyoming. Not a single paved road was around for miles. It was very peaceful at times because you could hear the rain falling in the distance. With no urban sounds to muffle the sound of nature these sounds went on for miles.
